nah, not new, I've had it since kids' wrestling. I've got about 250# of iron I can put on it. felt fine for pressing, mabye even better than fine.

only thing is that the bar doesn't have rotating ends, so cleaning it into position sucks. I guess it doesn't really suck, but you wouldn't use it when cleaning for reps.

the term for it is actually a standard barbell. looked this up on wikipedia. the weight on them is usually 22#. I'm going to have to weigh mine (for some reason I thought it weighed 17#). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbell#Standard_Barbell

Squats 1x5x130, 165, 200, 230, 1x3x270, 1x8x200
Bench 1x5x105, 130, 155, 180, 215, 1x3x215, 1x8x155
Cleans 1x5x85, 105, 127, 150, 1x3x175, 1x8x130

assistance:
Preacher culrs 3x8x85
Skull Crushers 3x8x65
Pull ups 1x5xbw

this work-out took a long time. lot of plate swapping! after the 1st week of this particular 5x5, I like it. I'll give it another 8 weeks and then gladly get back to a HST cycle.

edit: that workout was done 3-21 (evening)

I hear you there. That's why I dropped the bb curls and skullz. How much time are you resting between sets? I do like the Madcow, but I'm starting to miss the simplicity of HST.

just pausing long enough to swap the plates and move everything around.

this is just the 1st week though, almost felt like a deload. the ramping up to the tops sets is my favorite thing. gives me good opportunities for practicing form.

I imagine I'll have to rest once the sets get heavier.

forgot to log that I'm still doing hang cleans instead of regular cleans. but, I pick the bar up from the floor and put it down after each rep (just more slowly than putting it all together for a clean). kind of like a dead lift/hang clean/front squat for each rep. I like it.

I think you'll like that version of 5x5. I had a lot of fun when I did it. The constant changing of plates does get a bit annoying but at least it passes the time between sets. But like you said, the ramping up to a top set is great especially if you are doing this after a harder routine previously. Once you get back up to your old RMs, I think you'll find the ramping up gets you real warm to set new PRs.

I do like it so far

starting to think about doing something similar to it when I hit the 5's of the next HST session. I would definitely (in that scenario) be front squatting on Weds instead of light back squatting.

Squat 1x5x135, 170, 205, 235, 270
Bench 1x5x110,135,160,190,215
Clean 1x5x85,110,130,150,175

assistance
2 Sets of 10 - Weighted Hypers w/ 25#
4 Sets of 10 - Weighted Situps w/ 10#

I think my form on cleans is improving, I've been concentrating on it quite a bit.

Great idea with the front squatting on Weds.

why thank you sir, I'm good at ripping off what has worked for Lol...now if I can just get it to work for me too!

Squat 1x5x130, 165, 205, 205
OHP 1x5x105, 135, 155, 175
Deads 1x5x220, 265, 310, 355

assistance
3x10x bw incline situps

I strict pressed 175 once. which was a PR. the other four reps in that set were push presses.

If your gonna steal, you might as well steal from the best. I don't think he'll mind!

it is insane. he's benching 275 now too, so I've got no moral victories left.

Darn! A 175 strict press. That's a gnat's whisker off 80kg! Great lift FF.

edging a bit closer to advanced according to exrx....

honestly, I never really intended to try for a PR on presses. but since they're in the 5x5 and the weights keep going up, I'll see what I can do and then push press the balance.

I just really feel like I could hurt myself with 1RM strict presses and I'm not sure why. Felt good today though.

Squat 1x5x135, 170, 205, 235, 2x3x275, 1x8x205
Bench 135, 135, 160, 185, 2x3x220, 1x8x160
Clean 85, 110, 130, 150, 180, 1x8x130

assistance
Preacher curl 3x8x92
Skull crushers 3x8x72

did top sets for bench & squats twice. program didn't call for it, but I needed a stress outlet today. would've done top sets for cleans twice too, but those take a lot out of me.

Nice work. Great lift on the OHP! I feel like they can be dangerous as well, I've hurt my neck and wrist in the past from them. I've found that if I put on my weight belt I feel a bit more confident and sturdy...but the wrist scares me the most when taking the weight from the rack.
