Lol's New HST Log

I get sore just by reading your log!!

Well...

Had an appointment yesterday with my oncologist to discuss my most recent CT scans (taken earlier this month). At my previous consultation it was revealed that the radiologist had missed some 'stuff' in my previous scans so all was not as well as I thought. It also transpired that a small naevus I had removed 13 years ago and that was determined to be benign at the time was in fact a malignant melanoma! (It was recently re-sectioned and re-examined - yes, I know, they do keep these tissue samples knocking around a long time. Good thing too.)

Anyway, it turns out that the small lump that showed up in my recent scan hasn't changed since the previous scan and so it would seem my body has the situation under control for the time being and my consultant is advising that it is best left alone and not chopped out. The offending lymph node will remain under observation over the ensuing months.

Which all means that I can look forward to an op free summer.

So now, to cut or not to cut? That is the question.

I would need to drop around 30lbs to look lean again. At a pound a week that would take me up to about the end of October. If I just drop 15 pounds that will take until mid-July. But, dropping 15 pounds seems hardly worth it. I'll have a leaner butt but that's about it! I don't really start looking lean until I hit 10%. It will no doubt delay my 500 deadlift goal if I cut but that might take a good while anyway.

Hmmm. Any thoughts?

Excellent news.

If the doctor is not gonna cut, it means that you can...

"Chicks dig squat butt".

It might possibly delay your 500 deadlift goal, but not necessarily. I've certainly been able to increase my strength even though I've been on a six-month cut. Of course, you are in an altogether different league, but even so, a cut doesn't have to imply a loss of strength.

Fri 28/03/08

Couldn't start until 1 am tonight/this morning!

ATG Squats: 10 x 70kg,

Bench Squats: 10 x 110kg (242lb), 5 x 140kg (308lb), 5 x 150kg (330lb), 5 x 160kg (352lb), 5 x 170kg (374lb), 3 x 180kg (396lb), 3 x 2 x 190kg (418lb) - probably could have managed 5 @ 180kg but wanted to try for a few heavier reps. Wonder what my 1RM would be for these? Hopefully, 200kg so might try that next cycle.

That's it for tonight. Might do some ATG squats tomorrow as I don't really feel like I work my legs a great deal doing bench squats. It's definitely a good way to get acclimatised to holding a heavy load on your back though; my traps and upper back are hammered.

Hey Quad, no way you're getting weak. Too much pleasure recently by any chance?

Hey Lol,

The bench squats are really fun. They are kind of like doing partials (at least that's the way it was for me) beacuse the benches at my gym didn't let me get down to parallel. In reality, you may be able to load on anywhere from 90-180+ more than full squats. It's good to expose the body to the heavier weights because it makes for room for PR's when switching back to regular ones. Good luck.

Soflsun: I think I am getting to parallel. My bench is pretty low at 16.5" to the top of the padding. I don't think I could add much over 50lb (if that) to my best ATG squat.

It's great staggering around with over 400lb on my back though.

(In the voice of Peter Griffin): "I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286, I got 286."

(In the voice of Stewie Griffin): "Do you mean 130 kilograms, Fat Man? Or are you referring to your best ever bowling score?"

(In the voice of Glenn Quagmire): "Ow-right!"

===========================

Bench Press: 10 x 60kg, 2 x 90kg, 1 x 110kg, 1 x 120kg, 1 x 130kg (286lb) PB, 3 x 110kg (242lb)

That's my best bench ever by a mile.

It didn't go up fast but it went up and that's what counts. Tried it again after a rest but no way was it going up again. Amazing how much stuffing a single can knock out of you. Really glad I got it before the end of this cycle. Left arm is suffering a bit now so I'll call it a day today rather than bug it some more.

I guess I'm not as weak as I thought I was...but I'm certainly feeling puny on these low cals. Good progress Lol; perhaps you'll catch my bench and someday (I hope) I'll catch your squats!

Week 12

Mon 31/03/08

Front Squats: 10 x 60kg, 3 x 5 x 110kg (242lb)

Standing Press: 10 x 40kg, 5 x 60kg, 1 x 80kg (176lb) PB, 3 x 5 x 70kg (154lb), 6 x 60kg (132lb), 5(MS) x 60kg (132lb) - those last 5 MS reps were pure evil!

That press PR (inspired by FearFactory's recent 175) sees me less than 10lb off Rippetoe's advanced category for my bodyweight which I'm pretty chuffed about. If I can keep my strength while dropping some fat that will do nicely.

NB.: I forgot to put my Oly shoes on for my first 3 sets of front squats. When I wore them for the final set it was so obvious why they were a really worthwhile purchase; the whole movement was so much easier to control. Squatting in trainers feels a lot like standing on a bed by comparison.

I may get a chance to do a quick bit of lifting before I leave for a break in the Scottish Highlands tomorrow (I'm off hunting haggis and single malts) but, if not, that's it for this cycle. Thanks to all of you for your support over the last twelve weeks or so. I think posting a log is a really good way to ensure I keep pushing myself and I hope it's been helpful to some of you good people too.

Next cycle I need to focus on my back a bit more as I haven't really worked it as hard as I should this cycle; I have neglected my deadlifting but I have reached some reasonable RDL loads for a first attempt.

This cycle has been brought to you by the letter 'O' (for Oly' shoes)
and by the number 3 (for 3 raw eggs in my post workout shakes!)

What's squatter's butt and how do I get one? Nice job with the cycle...glad you stopped squatting on rubber balls, was getting worried you were focusing too much on your foot grip stregth.

I am totally dominated.

....did the St Crispen's day speech offer any inspiration? have you decided to cut? the suspense is killing me slowly.

I've decided to secretly hope for a cut; in order to make inroads on your domination.
