Lol's New HST Log

I like one-arm presses for the focus you can put on each arm. I wouldn't want to do them to the exclusion of bb presses or upright rows though. I like having the three different exercises to work with but I definitely think it's a good idea to do some single arm movements - they highlight any obvious discrepancies between the two sides.

Hey Lol, great lifting. 352 for 15 reps is truly insane. Real sorry to hear about your illness. I hope and pray your operation and healing process goes smoothly. A quick queation for you about power cleans if you don't mind. Did any of your shoulder problems arise from doing them? It seems the last couple of weeks they've been really irritating my left shoulder and I'm trying to find out why. Could I possibly be pulling it to high before the catch? Thanks for your time.

My lower back still hasn't fully recovered from Wednesday's deads from hell. Starting to feel a lot more like my usual self again though so that's good.

Back Squats: 5 x 60kg, 5 x 90kg, 2 x 10 & 1 x 5 x 130kg (286lb)

Shoulder Press: warmups then 3 x 10 & 8 x 60kg (132lb) - very slight push press on the 10th reps of sets 2 and 3. Experimented with a slightly wider grip with pinkies on the rings.

Found this little gem. Definitely worth a watch if you are into weightlifting:

Darn cool old Oly lifting training vid

If anyone can understand what the narrator is saying and can post any useful info gleaned that would be great. Is it Russian or Polish?

Bax: I don't seem to get any trouble with my shoulders when cleaning but I do get discomfort in my forearms and in front of my elbows (where all the tendons cross the joint) due to a lack of flexibility when catching the weight in the racked position. I think my shoulder trouble stems from the fact that something is different in my right shoulder. It's always the problematic one. I hope you find out a way to help your situation.

Sometimes it's best just to give a troublesome lift a break for a while and then ease back into it gently. Doing this has allowed me to start benching again and so far my right shoulder has behaved well enough to enable me to get some PBs, even though it makes a lot of strange noises compared to the left one.

Mon 06/05/08

Bench: 10 x 50kg, 5 x 70kg, 5 x 90kg, 2 x 10 x 95kg (209lb), 7 x 100kg (220lb) - still trying to improve my form with bench.

Single-arm DB Rows: 15 x 36kg, 15 x 46kg (101lb), 2 x 10 x 56kg (123lb)

Grip workout with No.1 & No.2 CoC grippers

Tue 06/05/08

Just a quick workout tonight.

Legs still pretty sore from Sunday's back squat session.

Front Squats: 10 x 60kg, 10 x 80kg, 2 x 10 x 90kg (198lb)

EZ-bar Curls: 22 x 41kg (90lb), 2 x 10 x 46kg (101lb)

Overhead Tri-Extensions: warmups then 2 x 15 x 46kg (101lb)

Thank you, sir. I'll try backing off a little.

LOL, I personally enjoy the one arm bent-over rows with DB's. Do you like them better than its Pendlay/Bent-Over barbell counterparts?

Hey Colby, I do enjoy doing them more than Pendlay rows but I think that's just because they are so much less taxing overall. My lower back is usually pretty beaten up most of the time so anything to give it a bit of rest is a welcome relief!

Weds 07/05/08

Legs are sore as heck after yesterday's session and I'm pretty tired tonight.

Power Cleans: warmups with 5 x 60kg (132lb), 5 x 70kg (154lb) then 2 x 5 x 80kg (176lb)

Messed up racking a few reps with 80kg on the second set and hurt my right arm a bit so decided not to do any more cleans tonight.

Also did a few chins and some RDLs

Can't believe how tired I feel after doing just that. I'll have a day off tomorrow and hopefully feel a little more invigorated by Friday.

twenty power cleans will tucker a man out! seem you've been sore for a week now. hope you rest well. how do you recover from muscle soreness? generally, I like contrast showers & a foam roller...

Why? What's a foam roller do?

Did some overhead squats this evening as I wanted to see how my right shoulder was doing. Power snatched the bar each set and took a grip with my hands about an inch in from the collars.

OHS: 10 x 20kg (empty bar), 5 x 30kg, 3 x 40kg, 2 x 45kg, 1 x 50kg, 1 x 55kg, 1 x 60kg (132lb) PB!

Can't find any record in my log of doing an OHS with 60kg before so I think it's a PB - not that it really means much as I perform this exercise so infrequently. I know I can go heavier though - assuming my shoulder holds out.

I think my shoulder flexibility has improved but my right makes a slightly unnerving click (not externally audible) as I get near to the lowest point and my shoulders have to rotate back a bit more. The left is fine.

It stood up to 132lb but decided not to push it any further tonight. Wrists were fried too. That's a pretty harsh angle when your hands are spaced like that under load.

I was about to say the same thing... that's a pretty stretched out Y.

Fri 09/05/08

Went to have a quick kip today at around 6:00pm and didn't wake up until 11:00pm! I've been feeling tired all this week. I put it down to the after-effects of the bug I recently had.

Decided to do some squats anyway as planned.

Back Squats: 5 x 60kg, 5 x 110kg (242lb), 10 x 140kg (308lb), 3 x 5 x 140kg (308lb)

The first set of 10 with 308 knocked the stuffing out of me. My form wasn't great on any of the following sets of 5 either. I'm definitely not back on top form yet.

Sat 10/05/08

Still feeling tired even after a good night's rest. Decided to be a bit careful and just do some bench rather than everything than catch up with everything I missed yesterday.

Bench: warmups then 5 x 80kg, 10,7,6,6,6 x 100kg (220lb)

Pleased I got 10 with the first workset. Tried for 11 but stalled out and had to bring the bar down to the rods which were set slightly below inflated chest level. After a short rest I did manage to press the bar from the rack safety rods back to the pins - without the stretch reflex it does feel a lot harder.

Mon 12/05/08

Front Squats: 10 x 60kg, 5 x 80kg, 10, 8, 5 x 100kg (220lb)

Pendlay Rows: 10 x 60kg (132lb), 3 x 10 x 80kg (176lb)

Press: warmups then 10 x 40kg, 5 x 50kg, 10,9,6 x 60kg (132lb)

Everything is feeling harder at the moment. Right arm is still bugging me. Pendlays were unpleasant. Oh well, I'll hope for better on Wednesday.

Wed 14/05/08

Deads: 10 x 60kg, 5 x 110kg, 5 x 140kg, 5, 6, 6 x 170kg (375lb) - reverse grip. Not enough stuffing to go for 10 reps with 170kg today!

Dips: 10 x bw, 20 x bw+20kg, 2 x 10 x bw+30kg (66lb)

Chins: 10 x bw, 3 x 5 x bw+10kg (22lb)

Upright Rows: 15 x 46kg, 2 x 10 x 61kg (134lb)

Bodyweight down to 220lb. Op tomorrow. Still undecided about cutting or bulking afterwards but the way I've been feeling this past week I don't think I'll be pushing for any bigger weights any time soon so cutting does have more appeal. I'll see how I feel in a few days.
