Aw boy, I'm also guilty of lowering the bar slowly. I think I fear that lowering it faster could do some damage. Perhaps I'm just doing something terribly wrong here? Also, I believe I'm doing most of the lift with my back. Could you give some general points on how to correct this? I'm sure I'm overlooking something pretty obvious, but what?

Cool topic, and Martin Levac deserves a couple of stars here.
 
My thinking is to get rid of the bar, don't drop it thru the floor, and save some grit for the next rep. I don't know why you'd worry about safety; it's the slow drop that is dangerous once the lift tensions and air are gone.
Now that I have my platform, it's getting a little noisier on the drop too.
