Received my Starting Strength on Weds. Today I used the wood block tip for squats by putting it in front of my toes. My knee just grazed it on the way down so I think that's good. Also tried the grip on the bar with the thumb over the bar. Not sure if I like it, but will try it a few more times. Worked also on clean form as described in the book. Tried to concentrate on the jump and brushing the shirt on the way up. Went pretty well.

Should I be getting 10 reps on my second sets? I could get 10, but would be close to failure, I'm trying to stay about 3 reps shy. Should I add a third set to get a total of 20 reps?

What was your answer? I would have told you to lift as much as you can* without:

a) going to failure
b) exhausting yourself in one exercise when you have to work that muscle group later in the workout (i.e. exhaust yourself at bench when you still have to do dips)

*much as you can IMPLIES as many reps within constraints of your program, such as 10 rep limit for a 10 rep set in HST. This also means as many sets as possible for I see no use in governing a constant volume approach or rigid amount of sets in HST.

Colby, thanks that pretty much hit it on the head!

Nice intense workout. Going to switch out the arnold pr. and just do ohp's. Dumbbells are getting tough to raise to the left shoulder. I'm thinking of trying max-stim for my last 2 weeks of fives. What would be a good weight to start with and what sort of m-time should I use? 5 rep max the first week and 3 the second week? 45 sec, 30 sec, shorter?

Max-stim can be awkward using dumbbells.

I usually start with a two or three-second M-time for the first few reps, increasing as I go as needed (usually adding about 1-second or so per rep), but always struggling to stay under 30-seconds. Dan will haunt you if you go much over 30-seconds.

I could see where dumbbells would be awkward.  I was thinking max stim for deads, squats, bench, ohp's, and rows.

Deads 310 10, 6

Dips BW+25 10, 6

Pendlays 150 10, 7

OHP's 113 10, 6

Hang Cleans 1x5x65; 1x3x85,95,115,115

No OHS's today.

Shoulder is not liking dips. Feels like a knife getting stuck in there. It feels like I'm getting weaker in OHP's. I could have maybe eeked out 1 more rep on the first set. Deads and rows felt strong.

when did you start doing clean and jerks BAX? impressive. what are your thoughts on them thus far? are they split jerks or push jerks?

I started the clean and jerks this HST cycle, but have only managed to do them twice. I'm shooting for once a week along with hang cleans and power cleans once a week. Really wanted to get the snatch down but shoulder says no. They're split jerks and even though the weight isn't anything spectacular I find them exhilarating. I'll just slowly increase the weight whenever I feel comfortable.

Deads 320 10, 5

Inc. Bench 150 10,5

Pendlays 165 9.5, 6

Clean+Jerk 1x5x65; 1x3x85,95,120,120

Switched to inc. bench press instead of dips. Still felt a sting in the shoulder, but not nearly as bad. No OHP's or OHS's today.

Went to Dr. on Weds. Seems I've developed a blood clot in a varicose vein on my left calf. Warm washcloths and ibruprofin is the treatment for now. The clot is in a superficial vein for now, but is only a .5cm. from entering deep veins which is a definite problem. Just have to monitor it to make sure it does't get any larger. I don't like the treatment prescribed, seems kind of minor. A half cm. from major veins is a little close for comfort IMO. Maybe I should get a second opinion.

Deads 3x5x330

Dips 3x5xBW+35

Pendlays 3x5x175

Hang Clean+Jerk 4x3x125

Really like the way those hang cleans are feeling. Felt good in the traps and upper back especially after the catch and going down to the squat. I think next cycle I'm going to have to throw some front squats into the mix.

Hope your issues with the blood clot works itself out. Did your doctor mention the consumption of B-vitamins, specifically the combination of:

500 mcg B12
100 mg B6
2400 mcg Folic Acid

I take this dosage daily to prevent blood clots as it runs in my family.

Colby, thanks, no they did not. I'll try that combo asap.

Comments about Sat. WO My strength is way down!! My old 5 rep maxes for squat and bench are 265 and 235. I will definitely not be able to hit that Weds. Pretty bummed about that. I was strong thru 15's and 10's surpassing my previous HST cycle. Now with the 5's I've hit the wall with those 2 lifts. Everything else is pretty much on target. My bodyweight has been holding steady between 170 and 174 the whole cycle. I have also lost an inch around the waist during this cycle- I like that.

I need some suggestions on how to progress with my squat and bench for the next 3 weeks. Should I just hold at the same weights this week and continue to progress next week for 3's. I'd really like to recoup some of that lost strength. Thanks for the help. Jeff

I would hold the same weights if it were me (on squat). With you getting 4 reps, it'd be nice to hit 5 w/ 235 before 3's. It might be of benefit to ramp up to a heavy single, maybe not an all out max but something to get your confidence back.
