Baxmans Trip

Week 5

I've decided to do my 5's Madcow 5x5 style not because HST isn't working, but because it better fits my strength goals.  I will continue with 5's for four weeks, deload and go 3x3.  When it ends in April' I'll take a couple weeks off, repeat the HST, 5x5 cycle while cutting.

Chins were a little heavy. Will stay at bw+50 for next workout. My supps were supposed to arrive today, but no dice. Have to wait till Mon. No whey or creatine for Sun. I'm also changing my multi, I've been using a cheap one for a couple months because low on cash(kids playing hockey).

Everything was heavy today. Played hockey with my boys earlier in day. Maybe that had something to do with it. I'm gettin to old for that. Judging by today I'll be surprised if I can even hit my 5 rep maxes.

Felt good today. Barley got my last rep on third set in chins. I think I'm going to low on dips, starting to hurt a bit in the shoulder. I need a new belt too. I've been using a regular lifting belt with a buckle and velcro. I'm having visions of those plates ripping off. Gonna check out some leather dip belts tomorrow online. Anybody have any recommendations?
 
I'm really glad I got my dip belt. For a while (actually over a year!) I messed around with my regular lifting belt and bits of rope etc. but finally got fed up with that. It wasn't what I ordered, but I was sent a TKO heavy-duty leather dipping belt. It's made from three pieces of leather riveted together and would have been excellent except one of the rivets popped soon after I got it. I decided to keep it anyway and fix it. If you get a belt with rivets be sure to check them ASAP.
 
Hey Bax -

My dip belt is leather and all triple-stitched. There's a chain that attaches with S-clips (one's fixed and one's open). I've had that belt for over 3 years now, using it both for dips and chins (with weights up to 105 pounds) and it shows no signs of wear. I'm not sure of the brand - I got it from a local bb equipment supplier. It may be this one. I'm very happy with it, though.

It's gettin' heavy. Sets 2&3 of squats, last 2 reps had to take 4 deep breaths in between. Bench and mil pr. was good, failing on last rep(shoulders are real sore today). I don't know what's up with rows, could have added 5 #, which would be my 5 rep max. Next week should be fun. Will be going for maxes and prs.

Felt real strong today. Push presses really put some strain on the wrists. Alittle sloppy this week on the carbs. Have to clean it up a bit this week.

Squats kind of disappointed me today.  I thought I could get 5 seeing that I did 255 for 3 at the end of Oct.  Maybe if I would have done them first, I could have hit it.  You know I thought about the weight all workout and maybe I psyched myself out.  I am happy that I hit all the other weights and reps that I ended my 5x5 with  in Oct , except for rows which was a personal best.  Last workout of 5's tomorrow.

I reckon that you should do your squats first next time just to keep things consistent and see how you get on. The Pendlays could have taken a fair bit out of your spinal erectors which might well have compromised your squats. Then again, you might have found that squatting first took a bit off your Pendlays. Swings and roundabouts!

Used my new dip belt today. It's alot better than the regular lifting belt. Much more security. I am going to cut the chain on it and replace it with a little heavier duty one and a bit longer. The workout was awesome. Put in a really nice effort and got personal bests on all lifts. A nice way to end 5's. Haven't decided what to do for final 2 weeks. I think I'll add weight and do 3x3. Negatives are out of the question. Any suggestions?

Felt GOOOOOOD! Love that heavy weight. Felt a little pain in the left elbow on that last set of push presses. Hope it was nothing. Got 1 more rep on squats at 255. Wore a belt for those this time just to be safe. I'll go without the next time. Also did 5sets of light power cleans. Im going to add those, snatch high pull and split jerks in my next cycle.

Can't frickin believe I got 400. I'm so f****ing happy. Funny a week or so ago I didn't think I would get my 5 rep maxes and now I'm hitting weights I never even attempted before. Gonna lift Fri. and try to get a new 1 rep max PR on squats and bench and then SD for 9 days. My CNS should be shot by then.

Does anybody ever have any problems with their hands falling asleep or going numb while sleeping? I've had it going on for some time wondered if I should maybe have it checked out. Thanks Jeff.

Isn't breaking 400 fun? Congrats!

I have that same issue with the hands while sleeping. I think it's pretty normal.
 
Thanks FF and Tim. I don't sleep on my hands, most of the time it happens while sleeping on my back. I wore one of those braces for awhile and that seemed to help, but kind of a pain in the rear to sleep with all the time. Ahhh, the joys of lifting I guess.

Jeff, I get this happen fairly regularly. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and can't move at all as both my arms are completely dead! I eventually manage to lift my torso and then blood starts to flow back in again; sensation starts to return and then I get treated to pretty intense 'pins and needles' for a while.

I have had this happen on and off from the time I was a teenager. It was very disconcerting the first time it happened but I am used to it now. (I awoke one night to find a clammy hand on my face. I whacked it really hard with my other hand to get it off me and then discovered that it was attached!)

I think I have a tendency to raise my arms over my head when I'm trying to get off to sleep and that causes some impingement in my 'wonderful' shoulders, effectively cutting off the circulation (or it might be pressure on a nerve or both?).

If you get a solution, I'd be grateful if you could let me know.

Oh, BIG congrats on breaking the 400lb barrier! What a great feeling that is.

thanks guys. If I find a solution to the dead hands at night I'll let you know. Mine always happens it seems when my arm is bent really tight to my body. Probally cuts off the circulation. Anyways, that brace they make for carpal tunnels has worked in the past. Well, off to the gym, gonna try to hit some PRS in squat and bench. Glad my gym is in the room next to me. Love that!
