Baxmans Trip

Last workout before SD

Squats 1x4x255:1x1x280 PR
Bench 1x3x230:1x0x250; 1x1x245 PR
Pendlays 1x3x200;1x1x215PR
Push Press 1x2x165 Ouch, pulled something bad in my neck.

Some new prs and a bad neck strain. Perfect time for an SD. I am really impressed with the simplicity of the HST cycle and the results. Added good size and strength to back and legs. Ended cycle just shy of 10# heavier. I'd have to say I did add some fat, but not so bad. To be expected with a bulk. Just means some dreaded extra cardio. I'll add a little bit in next cycle. Took some pics and will post on Sunday. Gotta run!

WEEK 1 Starr 5x5(Madcow version)

Squat 5 5 115,145,175,200,231
Bench 5 5 100,125,150,177,202
Pendlay 5 5 85,110,130,150,175

Felt good to lift again after 10 days off. Squats were tough as usual. Everything else was good. Legs are REALLY sore today. I'm going to really watch calories this cycle and maybe start some cardio midway to try and trim off a little fat. I dread the cardio!! Well, it's nice to be back, got some catching up to do

Looking forward to being able to run outside & play disc golf again...but I too dread cardio on machines.

Push Pr 4 5 87,105,122,140
Deads 4 5 205,247,290,330
Chins 4 5 BW+41,49,57,60

Power Clean 3 5 65,95,120

Nice workout today. Chins were tough. May have to adjust because of increased bodyweight. Gave myself a fat lip on my last set of push presses. Smacked my chin on the way up. Nice move slick!

Squats 5 reps 115,145,175,202,
3 reps 236
8 175
Bench 5 101,126,151,177
3 207
8 151
Pendlays 5 85,110,130,150
3 180
8 130
Weight Dips 5 BW+ 40,50,57,65
Skulls 5 65,75,105
BBCurls 5 55,70,95

Supersets on Pendlays and dips and on skulls and bb curls. Boy, my tris were fried. Been awhile since I did bb curls, felt good. Thinking about dropping them and the skulls though, I think bis and tris get enough work from all the other exercises. Anybody else have an opinion on this? Thanks, Jeff.

BAX,

I like using a weight belt for the push press. I seem to get less issues with my neck and back with the belt on...and it shouldn't negatively affect the benefits of the exercise.

Bax,

Just in case this applies:

Sounds like you might be looking up too much if you hit your chin (unless, of course, you have a very protruding chin?

). If you look up too much you will be opening yourself up to neck strain so try to keep looking straight ahead to keep a neutral spine if you aren't already doing so.

LOL and Soflsun thanks for the tip.

3-4-08

Squats 5 5 118,150,180,205,237
Bench 5 5 105,130,155,180,207
Pendlays 5 5 90,110,135,155,180
Good Morns 2 8 125
crunch 2 20
Hang leg 2 15,7

Squats were way heavy at 237. I don't know what's up. I was doing 20# more in Nov. I could barely get the last rep. Piss me off! I'll see how my next two workouts go, may have to adjust or increase weight in smaller increments.. Hope it was just an off day. Everything else felt good.

I'll second the enjoyment of playing outside = so much better!

Yeah outdoor stuff is much more fun than the treadmill, but with 25 below zero tonight for a low here in northern Wi. tonight, outdoor fun will have to wait. Damn that's cold and that doesn't include the wind chill brrrr. Spring just around the corner.

3-6-08

Squats 4 5 118,150,180,180
Push Press 4 5 90,107,125,143
Deads 4 5 210,255,295,340
Chins 3 5 BW+ 42,51,60;1x3 62.5
situps 3 20,13,7

Going to hold at current weights on chins until I get 5 reps at 62.5. No chin injuries on push press today. Abs are weak. I really slacked off on ab exercises over the month or so. I really like push presses, now if I could get that power clean form down, I'd love to combine both moves.

25 below is insane! we're supposed to get down to 14 tomorrow night & I thought we had it bad...

Yeah, 25 below tonight and 40 above on Sunday. I think I'll break out the oil and swim trunks and work on my tan!

Yup, in the Midwest, when it gets above 20 degrees Fahrenheit, we break out the motorcycles!

Hey Bax,

Just read your log in it's entirety. You had a great cycle, what made you decide not to continue with another HST considering the first went so well? Regardless, I believe the 15's are very important...and they can be quite challenging as well. I've seen some good growth during this phase. I would suggest doing all exercises 2x15 for your next cycle, and really making sure that at the end of the mesocycle you are hitting 15RM. This will add even more to your success IMO. Good luck.

Hey Soflsun, my decision to switch to the Madcow has to do with some strength goals I have set for the year, which ends in June. Need to get to 300 on squat and 275 on bench and 175 on military press. I had real good strength gains with the Madcow 5x5 in Oct.-Dec. My plan is to try and get 8weeks out of the 5x5 take a week off and do Korte 3x3 while cutting. This will take me into June when I will do 2 HST cycles for the summer. I will definitely do 2 sets in my 15's next time around. I also believe it will provide some nice growth.

Had an unexpected three days off so I am doing week 2 over with just a small increase in weight on the last sets.
